New River Dries Update

This week was my very first time surfing the new river dries! Man oh man now I know what all the hype is about. These waves are so much fun, not only because they are big bouncy and let you surf all day but because there is three of them!!

The first day we showed up and there was almost no water, and no waves, we waited at a Café for several hours went back and tada, the water was there and so was the waves! After paddling for two hours with the water constantly rising, darkness finally ended our first day, did I mention it was also amazingly cold?

Second day we headed out after another big breakfast and paddled not for two hours, but 6!!  Six whole hours of non stop surfing… we had a fire for warmth and no lines the whole day…The water dropping out ended our 6 hour fiasco.

The boys paddled for an hour at surprise wave the next morning and I played shuttle bunny and took the dogs for a walk…My body didn’t want anything to do with bouncy waves anymore.

Here are the photos to show the wonderful kayaking we did all day. Photos are from each one of us, Dane, Nick, Clay and myself.

Just because its winter doesn’t mean kayaking is done, high water south east has just begun!

Happy Paddling,
Emily

Emily Jackson and Soft Power Health’s Inner City Kids Camp

submitted by Emily Jackson

video by Nick Troutman

Every year Soft Power Health teams up with the Upward Bound program from Boys and Girls Harbor. We take these kids, some not even knowing how to swim, and we teach them how to kayak. We start with getting comfortable being in the water in a pool, then move to a Long Island beach and bay, and finally ending with two different river runs. Here is the group from 2010.
